Sally
McLean's name may not be familiar to everyone but
she is one of Australia's most accomplished actresses. Some
readers may remember Sally from Neighbours and the
Flying Doctors but did you know Sally played the role
of Macbeth? a truly amazing feat that was very special
to her as she is of Scottish heritage. Sally's career is an
amazingly diverse on from Australia to London and working
with a variety of actors and directors. Sally is a very talented
lady......
... Sally recently made her theatre debut as a writer/director
with the play "Chasing Pegasus" (A Play in Ten Chords), which
is being restaged with her in the role of "Katherine" at the
end of January 2004. See http://www.salmac.com/chasingpegasus/.
She also filmed her directorial debut in December with the
Tropfest Short film "fixNATION".

McLean |

| Favourite Role |
To date, I'd
say it's a draw between "Andy" (A Little Rain Must Fall), "Angie Powers"
(Bootleg) and "Ado Annie" (Oklahoma) - all for different reasons. |
| Latest Role |
I'm currently
preparing for a film role. Details available when I'm given permission
to spill them … ;) |
| Highlights of Bootleg you

Playing opposite
Tim Robertson and being directed by Ian Gilmour. Both a joy to work
with. Great crew too. |
| Highlights of A Little Rain
Must Fall you wish to share |
Many! The
launch in London was mad. A definite major highlight once the film
was completed was Sir Nigel Hawthorne becoming Salmac's Honorary Patron
and my unofficial mentor. |
| Highlights of Just Move Your
Lips you wish to share |
Dying by poison
(the character's fate, not the film!) |
| Highlights of Annabels's Requim

My London
stage debut, playing a role written for me - it was all pretty amazing. |
| Highlights of The Bookworm

Working with
director Mandy Chang. Filming in the middle of Piccadilly Circus,
under Eros in a fake red phone booth that the crew had to continually
stop tourists from trying to use. Also, during the snogging in the
phone booth scene, realizing that a couple sitting on the steps of
Eros were giving myself and my fellow actor (Mark Walden-Mills) heavy
competition in the steamy snogging stakes. Amazing what people will
do when there's a camera around. |
| Highlights of Macbeth you

Playing a
King of Scotland. Being a woman, and of Scots descent, that greatly
appealed to me. Performing Shakespeare in the city he wrote and lived
in. Meeting Alistair Barrie - brilliant director and stand up comedian
- one of my closest mates who keeps my feet firmly planted on the
ground. |
| Highlights of Lovepuke

Working with
another great friend and actor, Jeff Richards and director (and actor)
Brendan O'Connor, who is mad and just plain inspirational to work
with. |
| Highlights of Your Perfect,
Now Change you wish to share |
Working with
Julia Morris - one of the most generous, funny and kind people it's
been my pleasure to know. Being under the direction of Andy Gale -
brilliantly creative and supportive New Yorker whom I hold dear. |
| Highlights of Blue Heelers
you wish to share |
The whole
process - great cast and crew. Being mistaken for a real journalist! |
| Highlights of The Flying Doctors
you wish to share |
Working with
Andrew MacFarlane. Lovely actor and very supportive and funny person
- made the 7am location calls in the middle of winter actually enjoyable!
Working with Paul Maloney - great director. Finding out that they
didn't use a real plane for the plane interior scenes - just the body
of one on a stack of tyres that the crew rocked during the takes.
Ah, the magic of television. |
| Highlights of Neighbours
you wish to share |
Spending time
with Guy Pearce, Jason Donovan and Annie Jones. Truly generous people
who took a real interest in others. Great examples to learn from during
my first foray into the world of television. |
| Preferred Medium (Stage, Screen,
Television) |
I love all three. Each
medium offers different disciplines and skills, and I find all of
them a challenge. I also do radio plays, so I'm game to try anything
(within reason!)
|
| Hobbies |
Writing short
fiction, Reading, Celtic History and Myth, Photography and Travel.
Hanging out by the ocean - pure inspiration and rejuvenation. |

| Favourite Book |
I'm just finishing
the latest Harry Potter installment, so that's my current favourite.
All time favourites? Anything by Charles de Lint. Amazing author and
lovely man. |
| Favourite Movie |
"Truly Madly Deeply",
"Sense and Sensibility", and about a hundred more I don't have the
room to list!
|
| Favourite Song |
"The
Voice" by Eimear Quinn. "Hollywood Movie" and "Hazy Shade of Blue"
by Tor Hyams. A recent addition is "Perfectly Comfortable" by Alan
Fletcher (if you haven't heard it yet, check out his website: www.alanfletcher.net).
Anything by Clannad. Peatbog Faeries are great too. And I've currently
got one of Sting's albums on my CD player. |
| Favourite Television
Program |
Currently,
"Hornblower" and "Spooks" |
| Memories of Training
with Bunny Brooks |
Bunny
was the first person working in the industry to encourage and support
me as an actor. I was only in my mid-teens when I attended her classes
and she gave me the confidence to keep going with my dreams. I owe
her a deep debt of gratitude. |
| Favourite Person to
Act Alongside |
James
Buckley - incredibly gifted and generous actor. Aki Omori, whom I
went through drama college with and is a great mate. I've already
named all the others (and if I haven't, they know who they are!) |
| Actor you would like
to work with |
Far
too many to mention here. As long as I learn something from the people
I work with (and its almost impossible not to), I'm happy. I would
have loved to play opposite Nigel, but sadly, that wasn't to be. |
| Favourite Quote, Saying or Motto |
"Live each day as if
it were your last - for then you can never lose." - an inscription
from one of my short stories. "Normal is just a cycle on a washing
machine" - Whoopi Goldberg. I also love Tallulah Bankhead's quote:
"No one can be exactly like me - even I have trouble doing it".
|
| Favourite Possession |
Not
a big one on possessions. Other than my imagination, I'd say my amethyst
pendant, given to me by one of the Gyuto Monks of Tibet. |
| Future Ambitions |
Plenty! Essentially I
just want to continue to do good work that positively affects people
- whatever form that may take.
|
| Why you became an Actor |
I've been
on stage since the age of 10, so I guess the short answer would be
- It was inevitable. To be honest, I can't imagine doing anything
else. |
| If you were'nt an Actor other
career choice |
A writer.
That's why I now do both! |
| About my website and how I got
involved in web development |
The web design
thing started with Salmac Productions' web site in 1998, which was
created to promote our projects and network with other filmmakers.
We also have an encrypted part of the site to discuss and talk over
projects in "real time" with Salmac's production team who are based
in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Los Angeles and Edinburgh. (It's cheaper
than making international conference calls!) |
